If you want to see some more about some of the art projects I have done or am currently working on, you are in the right place. I post process pictures and completed pieces and update it maybe sometimes....
I have worked as a volunteer for 4 different Halloween Iron Pour events at The Steel Yard. I have participated varying amounts across the years, but its always a ton of fun and I love seeing the completed work, and its a great time seeing them set on fire and activated with molten iron.
My first year volunteering for fab nights. I only really worked on forging out some of the many teeth, but it definitely got me excited about working with metal and volunteering at the steel yard
For the second year volunteering at fab nights, I worked with a few experienced artists, but upped my participation, working on a bunch of different aspects and re-learning to weld.
The pandemic changed the shape of the Iron Pour event, but we built awesome props all the same. I worked with a largely amateur team and even taught some people to weld and we built a giant flying prop that soared on a zip line.
The most recent Iron Pour was themed around Victorian Gothic props, and our team built a giant portrait with ornate frame that burned away to reveal a skeletal version of the same portrait.

As a part of my first blacksmithing class I made a bunch of items to practice various skills, including this spoon, some S-hooks, a bottle opener, and a few other things.
One of the most interesting parts of blacksmithing is that you can make your own tools. I made this pair of tongs, and they fit the way I like
I make a traditional Scandinavian style axe with a forge welded high carbon bit. I learned about forge welding and got some experience working with bigger pieces.
Continuing the process of building my own tools, I forged my own hammer. Learned how to use a power hammer and created a hammer to my own preferences
I made my first knife using a traditional lamination style where a carbon steal bit is laminated between mild steel pieces.
Recently I have made a few Rubik's twists out of railroad ties which i have put together in a larger piece which i will put on here soon. Stay tuned

I made this polyhedra out of steel and then had it powder coated for a durable bright finish.
I made a steel Mobius strip by using to interlocking rings that are connected around their circumferences .

My first attempt at casting metal was using scratch blocks and scratched aluminum vessels. I learned quite a bit about casting and mold making and made 6 pieces in a short time.
My first attempt at making a mold on my own involved making a foam burnout of a skull that I hand carved from styrofoam. This technique is a bit gross and results in some acrid smoke, so I will not be doing it again.
As a follow up to the burnout technique I decided to build my own two-part mold that could be used for casting without the nasty side effects of burning out foam. I learned quite a bit and successfully cast two of the molds I had made.
I am in the process of making a lost wax casting of a few objects shown here on a sprue tree. I will update this when I have newer photos and more info.
